Week 10 Questions (Pleming)

 1. I found Hall's argument regarding globalization's destabilizing impact on identity to be well-founded. However, the process of globalization has advanced dramatically since 1996, space and time have never been more compacted than they are now. Nonetheless, the current political situation in the US suggests a resurgence of national and racial identification among white Americans. I wonder how this moment might be squared with Hall's 1996 piece.

2. Considering Hall's sampling of Butler's Gender Trouble, I'm interested as well in more specifics on how identity, conceived as immaterial, shifting, and ultimately impossible, can be used as a theoretical concept. How can scholars clearly observe identity, let alone use it to understand socio-political realities, if it won't sit still?
