Week 11 Questions (Pleming)
1. I wanted to highlight this quote from Hall regarding patriarchy in his response to hooks's comment about humor and play: "It is exactly that. The absence of any ironic view of oneself that allows the maintenance of that patriarchal politics." This quote compressed a lot of disparate thoughts I've personally had about patriarchy and, in particular, "manosphere" influencers who are simultaneously ridiculous and completely insulated from their own ridiculousness.
2. I was struck as well by hooks's formulation of the family removed from a conservative, heteronormative framework. As hooks explains, separating, or reclaiming, family from conservatism allows for much more appreciation of the diverse forms that family can take. Additionally, I believe this articulation of family gets to questions of organizing and community in a world that increasingly atomizes us.
allows the maintenance of that patriarchal politics
